Caring for Your Trees In Spring: A Guide to Seasonal Maintenance

Spring is the perfect time to check in on your trees. As the days get longer and the sun peeks through more often, your pleached trees are waking up and getting ready to put on their new growth. Now is the perfect time to give them extra attention and we’re here to walk you through the key jobs that’ll keep them healthy, happy, and looking their best!

Water, Water, Water!

Spring might still feel cool, but it can be dry for days. If your trees were planted in the last two years, they’ll still need regular watering while they get properly established. Adjust for rainfall but a good water every other day does the trick.

Replace the Frame Ties

As your tree grows and matures, the branches start to thicken, and sometimes the new foliage gets trapped under older ties too. Simply snip off any the overly tight cable ties. You might find the branches are already holding their shape, or you may need to replace the ties to keep the structure. You can replace them with looser ties, or switch to something softer like rubber or elastic as the tree matures. We don’t recommend metal wire, as it can damage the branches over time. And don’t forget to check the tie on the central bamboo cane while you’re at itDon’t forget to check the tie on the central bamboo cane too. For the first couple of growing seasons, you’ll need to tie in the branches at regular intervals to help them follow the frame. Just make sure nothing is digging in or causing damage.

Train or Prune Rogue Shoots

Notice any branches trying to go their own way? Gently weave them back into the pleached frame if they’re still flexible. For any that are too far overgrown or awkwardly placed, give them a light prune to tidy the shape.

Check the Stakes

If your tree’s looking loose or lifted, gently straighten it, firm the soil, and hammer the stakes back in. Re-tension or loosen the ties as needed, they should be snug but not too tight. A bit of movement in the breeze helps your tree grow strong and resilient.

Add Fertiliser

A good quality, controlled-release tree fertiliser in early spring gives your tree a boost right when it needs it. One treatment in spring and another in autumn is ideal. Always follow the label to avoid overfeeding.

Keep an Eye Out for Early Pests

Caterpillars and other pests love a spring feast. If you spot curled leaves, sticky residue or clusters of insects, wipe them away or treat with a suitable product. Early action is best.

Top Up the Mulch

Mulch helps your tree retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature. Looks smart too!
